NEWS: Ascend, a new philanthropic initiative, was announced yesterday at the Concordia Europe Summit in Athens. Initial funding commitments include provision of humane shelter for displaced people with a focus on unaccompanied minors, community programming including provision of food, medical care, psycho-social services, and vocational training for refugees and Greeks struggling with the ongoing economic crisis.

Abroad, Canadian business leaders like Frank Giustra have done amazing work to make it easier for vulnerable migrants to find a place to live. Last November, Frank went to Lesbos in Greece and to help set up a reception centre to offer shelter for 1500 refugees arriving by sea. He went back just last March with members of Vancouver’s search and rescue team to help the local authorities save more lives

Radcliffe Foundation Partners with Clooney Foundation for Justice

Clooney Foundation for Justice: The Clooney Foundation for Justice has launched a private sector initiative designed to educate all out-of-school children in Lebanon, including Syrian refugees. Google.Org, Virgin Unite, the Radcliffe Foundation, and the SABIS® Foundation are among the founding partners who, along with the Clooney Foundation, are contributing funding and resources to the initiative.

On Lesbos, Much-Needed Transit Site Provides Crucial Services to Refugees

International Refugee Crisis: We had watched the dinghy from about a mile out, making its way slowly across the Aegean Sea to the island of Lesbos. The scene along this coastline has become familiar: a small corps of volunteers waiting on the shore, using hand gestures to caution the person steering the boat to slow down; the overcrowded dinghy full of anxious faces turned toward land tantalizingly close.
